Reading your title, I really can't help thinking "of course it's not that great". Email. I wasn’t really familiar with anyone in the Ares cast except for maybe a small role in a movie or TV series that I can’t even remember clearly. [–]newtothelyte 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (4 children). Suicide squad definitely put that statement to the test though lol. Review this for what it is and for what it intended to be, not for anything else to make you look smart. [–]Mithridates12 66 points67 points68 points 3 years ago (1 child). The end was laughably bad and the movie really fell apart at that point. I hated Chris Pine's "heroic ending" because it was just the end of Captain America. The story was used to tell a proper message(which I feel most superhero movies don't do) but if you take real history into count, the movie feels clumsy. Edit. Basically, anyone over the age of 10 is going to immediately see the film's shortcomings. 6 DCEU: Ares. If someone truly thinks The Avengers or Taylor Swift is great art, then certainly they should discuss it. I think Atomic Blonde accomplishes a similar goal, but it's also been similarly criticized for being overly reliant upon genre convention (as well as 80's kitsch). I picked up the habit, but I've taken it a step further. It wasn't a good movie by any stretch, but DC had been releasing so much shit that it looks good in comparison. If you follow any of the above links, please respect the rules of reddit and don't vote in the other threads. The twist; why do so many films feel the need to put a completely unforshadowed twist at the end? Do you mean to say that the movie isn't great, or that you just didn't like it (probably because it didn't live up to your expectations)? It's generic block busters trash without artistic merit. I am not trying the say the movie was a messiah and has a lot of flaws but for what it was. That power is what lets her defeat Ares, not fists. I was hoping her disillusionment would come sooner in the film and her journey would have been to find a way to reconcile the two conflicting belief systems to ultimately build a more logical argument to stand for love/human potential. God of War won Game of the Year 2018. And Diana understands that while humanity can be evil and doesn't deserve saving it's not about what humans deserve echoing what Steve said. I They aren't Nazis and it's harder to sell the truth and justice shtick when you're murdering guys who only committed the crime of fighting for the wrong country. Anyway, I was disappointed to see OP's evaluation of Wonder Woman being completely about whether it was good or not, in an artistic sense. And to the wizard of oz? This movie could have been more thoughtful, could have pushed the superhero genre not simply by offering a female protagonist but also by daring to be better than the mediocre fare that is par for the course in this genre. And I can't remember a single hero movie from my childhood with a female lead (although I guess there were female Power Rangers), and that's the reason WW got so much acclaim. It still gives many a great feeling and is still a strong female superhero figure. That's a great point and I definitely think the film would have benefited from including the humans more in the final confrontation between Diana and Ares (like the battle for Gotham's soul between the Joker and Batman in The Dark Knight). This is from someone who has enjoyed many superhero films, so I’m at a lost as to why this film got so much praise. That’s a good point about the final battle. But then at the end they do the heroic thing, right after saying "nah we're bad guys we don't do that"? It's generic block busters trash without artistic merit. But, I wouldn't suggest it either. Which is exactly what this subreddit was made for. [–]beeswaxx 37 points38 points39 points 3 years ago (31 children), you sound rather pompous, I have seen plenty of blockbusters with artistic merit, [–]SirSoliloquy 25 points26 points27 points 3 years ago* (1 child). About half the "cast" has very little screen time, let alone character development. Can you explain that? Clearly it's just for modern American audiences, but in my opinion, it looks so much like the makeup of our time that I found it jarring, almost as much as watching, say, Star Trek from the 60s and seeing the big hair and other fashion from that time. Wonder Woman Characters Ranked By Likability The DCEU's Wonder Woman movies have introduced many familiar characters to the big screen but not all of them are as likable as Diana herself. r/movies: News & Discussion about Major Motion Pictures. Oh well it's okay if you really didn't like the film I have no right to make you feel the film is any better. Africa would be so happy with her <3 #respect | 2 comments I feel like in some of the wonder woman stories, those ridiculous point-of-views are challenged and she arrives at new conclusions. After reading some reviews I do agree that some of that moment was salvaged by Ares saying that he merely whispered in their ears, but they were capable of evil by themselves. Share Share Tweet Email. She breaks guns like other heroes break bones. Many don't, we all know that. EDIT: The only thing I liked about the movie were the London scenes, and those we're still riddled with WW being unbelievably incompetent. Agreed for the most part on all of this. The band of misfits felt lifted straight from Captain America and was cliche. I️ actually thought they could’ve done a lot more with Ares’ like “I’m not the god of war, I’m the god of truth”, [–]PixelBrewery 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children). The evil is still abstract and within humanity but there are some people who drive humanity for the worse like Ares whispering in people's ears. The odd case where they do (Deadpool, Logan), this sub tends to reward them for it. Establishing a peace treaty hoping for a second, even bigger World War? [–]Mithridates12 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children). The acting didn't help and I was definitely bothered by how smooth Trevor's arrival went over - he wasn't greeted with open arms, but the shock/surprise/suspicion on both sides wore off quickly or wasn't there to begin with. Making action scenes boring because the lead was so irresponsible that she became visibly pregnant while filming isn’t supporting women’s rights. We want to encourage and support in-depth, intellectual discussion. Ola Rapace stars as a boxer who is forced into testing a dangerous new performance-enhancing drug for one of the corporations that now controls France. Ares has lightning powers now? Watch all you want. Really interesting take. Personally I thought the best part of this movie was the chemistry she had with Chris Pine. Giving Diana sudden Hadouken powers to use against Professor Lupin while he tries to look intimidating is hardly any more ridiculous than that part of Guardians of the Galaxy where Star Lord distracts Ronan the Accuser with an attempted dance-off. Diana's naivety - Honestly, you could complain about most "fish out of water" characters, but that doesn't necessarily reflect badly on their respective movies. 3) Peruvian cinema: I have at least three Peruvian films in my queue to watch. Just as soon as the movie poses this question--in doing so, setting up the possibility for a very smart, very thoughtful superhero movie, something above and beyond what we have seen before--it opts for an easy way out. They set up an interesting plot point with Diana becoming disillusioned with her black and white morality. That really only works with the benefit of hindsight and ignores the historical perspective of the time in which The Great War was already the greatest war the world had ever seen. But both have had pretty underwhelming offers IMO. [–]raw_image 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children). Then there were also these moments where she seemed impatient to get to the war, but then a minute later she’s like “oh look a baby”. If by that you mean a place for casual film-discussion (you can like or dislike Kubrick, neither opinion should be downvoted out of hand), then do it. I recently watched Wonder Woman for the second time since seeing it in theatre and now that the dust has settled a bit on how great it was to have a female-driven superhero film directed by a woman, I have to say it really wasn’t that great of a film. Weak action scenes and terrible villain. Heels and eyeliner. While I agree that trying to evaluate the artistic merit of today's tentpole blockbusters, especially superhero films, is going to be a shallow endeavor, I think its still important to analyze them. I do not have faith that Justice League will be good, at all. He propped up a sign that says "Movie Night- Open To All" in front of the Ares cabin door. They needed no encouragement from him, etc. I usually don't put much stock in these, since I feel they are very minor and not important aspects of film (there are films without either, so it must be true, but I digress). The whole reveal where she killed the guy she thought was Ares and nothing changed really lost its weight when Ares was revealed right after. It also didn’t help that after Diana leaves, there’s no feedback to her world in the rest of the film, the film just kind of forgets about it, and so did I. Diana’s naivety really crossed the point of annoyance and became cringeworthy at times; I thought the contrast between things she did know about (languages, books on sex) and things she was completely clueless about (marriage) was pretty arbitrary, but I especially disliked how she seemed to have no social awareness whatsoever and constantly needed Steve to grab her by the arms to explain her how silly she’s being. and join one of thousands of communities. yes. [–][deleted] 26 points27 points28 points 3 years ago* (0 children). I don't want a superhero movie to delve too deep into such themes and analyze who is at fault for what in WWI, but the way the film was set-up there could've been a moment when Diana realizes: Hey, these German I'm killing aren't bad guys, they are not the problem/the ones causing all this and then focuses on not killing them. To say that we should just all bow down to the voice of the majority is harmful to culture. Wonder Woman , as a whole, is a massive success story. * You might be surprised how entertaining some of these videos can be. 2 could have been about her integrating with the rest of civilization and gotten all of the Doctor Poison stuff out of the way. In a future France with many unemployed, big companies run the country. And yet, the strongest women still looked like they'd just stepped out of Amazon Vogue. Even with the completely unnecessary plot twist that David Thewlis (in an odd casting choice) is actually Ares, the scene where he appears and disappears in the windows of the guard tower poses a really interesting question: how do you fight the abstract and omnipresent nature of evil? However, it’s often the same questions, so we’ve tried to make a little FAQ here and give our answers. [–]nabster100 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children). Even at the end of the film where she’s battling Ares the humans don’t really seem to pay attention (as if they’ve already seen dozens of superhero flicks like we have). Stupid. He looks good, he's a beast and I wanted to read more about him. Yet my love for the film will remain but Thank you. But it's been done to death, so everyone else has moved on to more original things like inserting the superhero into other genres - Logan is a western, Spider-man Homecoming is a teen coming of age movie, The Winter Soldier is a spy thriller, etc. I'm also not sure how it connects to BvS where Wonder Woman is clearly more cynical than she seems at the end of WW, maybe there will be a sequel that bridges that gap? However, the film lacks imagination in its finale and drops the ball. So it all comes down to this. If I would happen on an island with a medieval/ancient, all-female warrior tribe, it would be a head-scratcher for me. My gf thought I was crazy; she loved it. There's not a one that isn't heavily dependent on the tropes you're talking about, and that's sort of the point of them. [–]GaryBettmanSucks 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children). The biggest issue with this movie for me is something you touch upon here that I would elaborate upon. I mean for fucks sake, we got an Ant-man movie staring Paul Rudd before a person of color could be the lead in a super hero movie? [–]theophrastzunz 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (3 children). It just gave the Fan-Boy inside me goosebumps but let me say that it could've been much better. Most of them, including Wonder Woman, to me fall in the category of being ‘serviceable to okay’. It could still have more secondary characters but at least have them arise naturally out of the story (like a captain/soldier in the trenches or something) instead of this ‘we’re gonna spend the next 10 minutes searching for eccentric individuals even though you’re not really gonna care about them anyways’. The ‘band of misfits’ added nothing of value; employing this trope is always a major red flag to me, like that’s the trope you go for when you are out of inspiration as a screenwriter. That felt in character. Your point about the moral ambiguity is spot on though. Africa would be so happy with her <3 #respect. The cinematography was so boring, too. I know I would be like "hmm that's bizarre" and then go about my day. Then the whole Ares fight checked me out mentally at the end. I think most of the Marvel movies are dumb and boring, and all of the other DC cinematic universe movies so far are dumb and boring. It didn't detract from her portrayal; if anything, it made it that much more realistic. This isn't to say she doesn't get into the thick of the gray and throw down, but the greatest violence in the film is directed towards the weapons the soldiers wield, not the soldiers themselves. [–]_Woodrow_ 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children), It's good compared to the dreck that DC has been putting out with their "shared universe" so in contrast it looks like a masterpiece when it really is just an average superhero film, [–]LoneKharnivore 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children). Hot New Top Rising. I'm more interested in its expressed ideology. There are issues with that movie similar to the issues you pointed out about WW, the origin story being somewhat clunky and alienated from the rest of the movie being one example. Ares is the surname of the mute right-hand woman of the Italian crime lord Santino D'Antonio, for whom she works as both a bodyguard and an assassin. To be fair, the second problem was that the pummeling sucked. The "fish out of water" gags in addition to all of the other superhero tropes are present in both films. It's like rebuttaling a newstory by arguing "who even knows what reality is? are very different superhero movies. AW gets usually dissed for this, but he at least tries and has an overarching theory to go with it. Better than Dark Knight and DC has made something better than Marvel's 4 years of boredom. This sub is more critical sure and expects a higher knowledge base of the medium, but that doesn't mean we need to be dismissive or elitist toward all mainstream work and those who enjoy them. I always find it hilarious when people in /r/TrueFilm critique Hollywood blockbusters like WW (or any other Marvel or DC movie for that matter) as if the sheer resounding popularity of the movie had anything to do with quality of the script, acting, historical accuracy, or whatever. There are plenty of art-house films that are also devoid of any artistical merit. Downloading music, movies, TV shows, text documents, books, and video games is possible (and very easy) with Ares.
